EM companies are ahead of the curve when it comes to ESG Governance Frameworks. As at December 2021, 31 of EM companies vs 15 of US companies have progressed on setting up ESG and/or CSR committees*. However, there are notable divergences across countries and regions within EMs.

  • Some EM countries (South Korea, South Africa) have made significant improvements in their governance framework by setting up an ESG and/or CSR committee

  • Meanwhile, others appear to be behind the curve, for example, GCC region

When it comes to climate governance, EM's are lagging on the reporting of Scope 3 Emissions.

They are also behind the curve on good governance versus the US. Female representation on Boards in EMs is staggeringly low 15 compared to US 47 Country divergence is evident. Some EM countries may have progressed on driving board independence, but lag on gender diversity. Correspondingly, there are notable divergences across countries.
